The Myth of the Arrival – Říp Mountain
Fact of the Czech figure „Three Lives of Czech Myths – Prague”
Part of the „The story of the beginning” topic
According to Cosmas, Forefather Čech led his people into the untouched wilderness and there, between the rivers Ohře and Vltava near the mountain Říp, he found a place that he began to appreciate. Here he is said to have offered sacrifices to the ancestors and built his dwellings, and as his name was Čech, the grateful companions agreed by divine inspiration that no more appropriate name could be found for the whole country. In the Chronica Bohemorum, the refuge of Forefather Čech is well described, but it is not an invention of scholars. The stone church on the top of an inaccessible hill suggests that Říp was part of the sacred landscape of the Duchy of Bohemia.
