Romantism and the modern tradition – Vyšehrad
Fact of the Czech figure „Three Lives of Czech Myths – Prague”
Part of the „The story of the beginning” topic
There is no doubt that Prague Castle has been both the sacral and political centre of the Czech community since the early Middle Ages. Nevertheless, Vyšehrad, located across the river, played an equally important role. The initial function of Vyšehrad was to be a private residence of the Přemyslid dynasty. From the 13th century, it served as a memorial place of the Czech duchy. During the reign of Charles IV, it acquired a special role as it was included in the coronation order of Czech kings.
The social significance of Vyšehrad was comparable to that of Prague Castle in the Romantic period of the 19th century. Towards the end of the 19th century, Slavín, the so-called Czech Pantheon, a final resting place of outstanding personalities of Czech national life, was built at the Vyšehrad cemetery.
