As a result of the occupation of the eastern lands of the Second Polish Republic by the Red Army, many thousands of Polish soldiers were taken prisoner by the Soviets. They were handed over to the NKVD, as were arrested policemen, landowners, factory owners, clerks or foresters. The military were divided into officers, non-commissioned officers and privates. The latter two groups of soldiers were sent back to Germany, sent to gulags or released from prisons. Officers were earmarked for liquidation.
At Beria’s request, the Soviet Politburo approved the execution of more than 20000 Polish army officers, foresters, clerks and policemen. The executions were carried out in many places in the western part of the Soviet Union. The most important execution site is the forest near Katyn in today’s Russia
