The entrance gate to the Auschwitz camp – Oświęcim
Fact of the Polish figure „The Auschwitz Nazi German Death Camp”
Part of the „The Holocaust” topic
“Arbeit macht frei” are the famous words that welcomed every prisoner entering and leaving camp every single day, as they marched out and came back from their work commandos. The sentence translates to “work will set you free” and comes from a title of a novel by Lorenz Diefenbach. Used during German economic crisis in the 20’s and 30’s, as a populist slogan to promote employment, once Nazis came to power began appearing at the gates to many concentration camps. The inscription made by the prisoners employed in the metal workshop commando in the 1940, became not only a symbol of the camp, but most importantly of the deceit that took place in order to hide what truly happened behind barbered wire.
