Fact of the Polish figure „Rightous Among the Nations”
Part of the „The Holocaust” topic
Warsaw Ghetto – around 300 hectares of gated part of Warsaw and 35 thousands of Jews that were living in it in the year of 1942. Living conditions in the ghetto were inhumane – famine, lack of drinking water, exposure to extreme heat and cold with lack of possibility to maintain general hygiene led to mass spread of sickness. The atmosphere was filled with fear, anger, suffering and hopelessness. On those grounds the idea of an uprising was born – on 28th of July 1942 Jewish Combat Organization was founded. The Organization was focused on preparing the inhabitants of ghetto for an armed opposition to the German forces, while knowing that the chances of survival, even resistance will be minimal, they still decided to fight. The fight began on 19th of April 1943 and lasted almost a whole month – until the 15th of May 1943. The fights ultimately lead to the death of thousands of Jews and destruction of the Warsaw Ghetto but will be remembered as the biggest Jewish armed uprising during the World War II.
