Fact of the Polish figure „Joining the EU figure in Poland”
Part of the „Back to Europe together” topic
On 16 April 2003, the Treaty of Athens was signed, allowing 10 countries, including Poland, to join the European Union. In all these countries, a referendum was held (excluding Cyprus), which was to decide whether their country should join the community. In Poland, it was held in two days on 7 and 8 June 2003. It was attended by almost 59% of citizens entitled to vote. 77% of voters voted in favour of joining the Union, and 23 against. As a result of this vote, pro-European parties declared great success and less than a year later, on 1 April 2004, Poland officially joined the European Union together with Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Malta, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Hungary.
