The Statute of Kalisz was issued in 1264 by the Duke of Greater Poland, Bolesław the Pious. The privilege consisted of 36 paragraphs that related to the freedom of religion, freedom of economic activity and, above all, the safety of the Jews and of property their owned. Importantly, the document also defined the sanctions for disobeying its provisions, especially those related to accusations of ritual murders. The Statute was modeled on earlier documents that were in force in Austria, Hungary or Czechs.
